Most other similar helmets for sale on line are not as generous in proportions as these. Even if you take a large (62cm) hat size, you can still comfortably get an arming cap and a chain mail coif under this. It has a 14 gauge (heavy grade) durable steel construction (0.1% carbon). Most of the face is covered by two steel sections so it has double that protection in many areas. The inside is coated with anti-rust paint. Visibility and air flow is surprising good. The visor lifts and can be locked into place (down or up).
Our helmets have some of the best chinstraps you will find on replica medieval helmets. They are leather (of course) and almost half a centimeter thick (3.5mm). Each strap is Y-shaped and attaches to two different points of the helmet – making it twice as strong as helmets that make a single connection on each side. This ensures less movement of the helmet and the preponderance of thick leather around the jawline adds to your protection. The buckle is solid brass and of an authentic medieval design too. The internal leather liner is comfortable, malleable and fully adjustable. Many competitors sell helmets with padded interiors (invariably made from modern materials). These padded interiors are not adjustable, so they will either fit, or they won't fit. Our laced interiors will fit you because they can be loosened or tightened to fine-tune the helmet to your requirements.
The most popular of the helmets (or more accurately "helms") in the 14th century was the bascinet. It appears on nearly every monumental brass from that era depicting a military figure, and was an essential part of military equipment – even for many lowly foot soldiers. Most helmets were of polished metal, others were covered with leather, and indeed silk and velvet as fashion dictated. Frequent references to these 'covers' occur in medieval inventories and wills. Sometimes, in the case of Royalty or noblemen of rank, the bassinet was encircled with a fillet or crown of gold and gems. The ocularium, or vision slit, was sometimes cut in the front of a salade, but more often it was set in a pivoted visor which could be thrown back.
