Of course there is nothing remotely medieval about aluminium and for combat, steel is better for absorbing heavy impacts, but for many the discomfort of having ten or more kilos pull upon their shoulders for hours at a time can really sap the enjoyment out of an event, or for those who simply want an authentic-looking medieval costume for a social or theatrical event, the encumbrance of steel armour might be undesirable. Even some seasoned re-enactors may choose to reinforce their heavy gauge steel plate armour with a substrata of aluminium chain mail to save a substantial six, seven or eight kilos.
This chain mail shirt is made from thousands of steel rings. Half the rings are riveted closed, the other half are solid. Cheaper unriveted chain mail is called "butted"; there are three major drawbacks with butted mail: firstly, it is historically inaccurate. In Europe, chain mail was always riveted. Butted mail existed only in a few parts of Asia. Secondly, butted mail falls apart: the rings can be bent and come uncoupled if you don't take care with the garment. Thirdly, unriveted links can be penetrated when the point of a blade is thrust into them - so if you are engaged in any theatrical swashbuckling, re-enactment or other shenanigans, riveted mail is safer.
