These robust and functional sixteen gauge (combat grade) clamshell gauntlets are fully articulated (with four lames). Sold as a pair, they collectively weigh 2.65 kilos and measure 29.5cm in length. Each has a five-digit suede glove interior. This gauntlet has a cylindrical base which gives protection to approximately 40% of the forearm. The gloved-hand is secured within the gauntlet by three sturdy leather straps. A fourth (optional) strap can buckle the gauntlet closed once in a grip position. These straps are not connected to the suede of the glove, nor are the glove's fingers riveted to the steel; for this reason the steel mitten will not interfere with the tightness of the wearer’s grip on a weapon. To the uninitiated, these gauntlets may look cumbersome and unwieldy, but in actuality they are merely a protective cup around the top of the hand, with the fingers beneath largely unhindered in their dexterity. This type of gauntlet was not a precursor to the fingered gauntlet, as all the evidence shows that both types were both worn during the same period. The fingered gauntlet was certainly more elegant, but the clamshell gauntlet (with less sections and joints to worry about) was probably considered a more robust and reliable piece of kit for the battlefield.
