Lugged spears were used as polearms rather than missile weapons. They were a good design that endured for over a thousand years. The wings enabled the wielder to parry or catch blows without tilting the spear away from an opponent: once a weapon was hooked against a wing, the spear could simply thrust forward before the opponent could recover. This particular example is a functional copy of a German lugged spear from the end of the Middle Ages, which had a wide blade and a central "rib" for extra strength.
