Another beautiful example of the armourer' art, this menacing type of bascinet was common during the last decades of the 1300's and into the early 1400's. It is perhaps surprising that this visor offers better visibility and breathability than other pigface or roundnose helms we have sold. This version features a segmented eyeslot as per the requirements of several re-enactment societies and Western martial arts schools. During the era of its usage in battle, the segmented visor was favoured as it prevented a dagger being thrust into the visor's ocularia (the duel vision slits of earlier designs). A fully armoured knight in the 1400's was impervious to swords and the vast majority of arrow strikes - even his armpits would have been covered by chain mail! in the grappling style of combat of the late Middle Ages, the horizontal slits in the visor of a knight's helmet were a vulnerable target (an Achilles Heal as-it-were); designs such as this one eliminated the problem.
