These are 100% cow horn nocks – one top nock and one bottom nock. Ideal for making your own bow, they are polished to a high shine. These nocks are provided with strong grooves. Top nock is 7.3cm long, the bottom nock is 5.7cm long approx. and the hole diameter for fitting to your bow is approx. 1.5cm (the cavity tapering inwards to form a long cone). These are perfectly aligned and sold in a pair (as shown in the picture). Since these are made from natural materials, the colour and shade may vary from piece to piece, although the ones pictured are fair and average representations. It would take most of us several hours to make horn nocks like these and that's after we acquired the raw materials and tools. With that in mind, our horn nocks are fantastic value, all the work is done! You just shape your bow tips and glue the horn nocks on with a strong epoxy.
Horn nocks probably came into general use as bow weights increased thereby making it more desirable to protect the rather soft yew wood from damage. Many Neolithic artefacts appear to have been self-nocked, but then the strings may have been thicker and the draw weights lower.
