One of my personal favourite types of armour is lamellar. Nobody knows exactly who created it first. It can be surmised through historical evidence that this type of armour originated in the Middle East. We can assume that it might have been the Assyrians and Babylonians. There is even some speculation that this mysterious armour might have been invented by the nomadic horsemen of the Black Sea region. Nobody knows for sure, but we do know that it was one of the earliest forms of metal armour. Unlike other early forms, such as scale mail, with which you needed a backing of some sort, such as cloth or leather, lamellar was actually 'free floating armour' - it was held together by itself, as all the plates were joined together by leather lacing. It was used throughout the Dark Ages and Middle Ages in eastern and northern Europe.
