A barbute is a visorless war helmet of 14th to 15th century Italian design, usually with a distinctive "T" shaped opening for the eyes and mouth. The barbute resembles classical Greek helmets (most strikingly the Corinthian) and may have been influenced by a renewed interest in ancient artifacts. The defining characteristic of the barbute is the fact that the shape of the helmet extends all the way down to cover both sides of the face. It gives the maximum facial protection without compromising vision, breathing or speech. The back of the neck is also protected.
Most barbute helmets you see on line have a 66 to 68cm circumference, ours is a fraction over 71cm. This means that it will comfortably fit an individual with a hat size 61-63. For people that take regular hat sizes, you will be able to get an arming cap and/or chain mail coif beneath this; however as it has an adjustable liner, an arming cap is still optional for people with regular hat sizes.
