What we have here is a Confederate artillery sergeant's Kepi sporting a Cavalry insignia badge. Why? Because we thought it looked good! The metal badge is simply a free item which can easily be removed without a trace. Was ever such a kepis used? In the later days of the Civil War, hard-pressed Confederate units wore a great mixture of uniform items - whatever they could scavenge, this included civilian gear and begged and borrowed items from other corps - under these conditions an artillery kepis may have quite easily found itself on the head of a cavalryman. Anyways - keep the badge and hat together, or separate them - the choice is yours.
