Our 18 gauge Crusader helmet weighs 2.886 Kilos, has a mid circumference of 75cm, and is 71.5 cm circ. at top - excluding rivets. It comes complete with a fully adjustable leather liner. This helmet has an extra long ocularium (or vision slit). This long wrap-around ocularium not only gives better vision, but also helps with air-flow. The front, has ornate ventilation holes, and in classic Templar style, is reinforced with a brass cross: giving formidable sword-proof facial protection. This helm will comfortably fit anybody with a hat size of 55 to 58.
Wearing such helmets partially restricts breathing, hearing and vision. I can only guess how hot they would have become under the desert sun, but despite the drawbacks, they were worn for good reason – they were almost totally impervious to any attack. Many Crusader victories against more numerous and lightly armoured Islamic forces can, in some measure, be attributed to the effectiveness of Crusader heavy armour – which was impenetrable by the standard Arab hand and missile weapons of the day. At Tiberias (1187) when the crusaders were hemmed in by the Saracens, after two days of hard fighting, when most of the lightly equipped foot soldiers were killed or wounded, when hardly a horse in the army could carry its rider, the armoured knights are known to have suffered no serious casualties.
