Back in the day, shield banding was used to reinforce the face of a shield. If the shields were made of planks, they were also a useful device to help keep the planks together. These bands are made from robust sixteen gauge steel, at the ends they're 6cm wide, the main body of the bar being 2cm wide. They are sold as a pair and have a combined weight of about half a kilo. Each has twelve evenly spaced nail or rivet holes (the rivets are not provided). This banding looks ice cool and will probably help deflect about a quarter of all glancing blows, adding greatly to the longevity of your shield. The bars can be used vertically or horizontally either side of the boss, but in reality there are many ways they can be arranged onto a shield face. Three can form a triangle, four can form a cross (making a square around the boss), or if the size of the shield allows, two bands can be put either side of the boss.
Important: the shields in the photos are not what is being sold here, they merely display possible usage of the banding.
