This is a long handled axe that is meant to be wielded with one hand. Its long handle adds to the speed of the head when it makes contact. As Sir Isaac Newton would have it: Speed + Mass = Force!! This is not some fanciful imagining of what a Viking might have carried - these types of axe heads have been found at Viking related archaeological digs. These are the real deal. The hook-like nature of the axe made it good for pulling down opposing shields or for catching into the popliteal fossa (knee pit) of an otherwise well-armoured opponent - a quick (albeit unsporting) way to bring him down. This axe could even have been used a climbing pick - such is the versatility of its design. It's not a good throwing axe though and it's not the best design for wood chopping, although it can certainly do that job, it's far more of a weapon than a tool. This axe does not come sharp - but it can be sharpened. The steel will definitely hold an edge. It weighs almost a kilo, and has an overall length of 61cm.
