In Ancient Rome and Greece, gaming was a favorite pastime at banquets and other social occasions. Small boxes were used as throwing cups to prevent manipulation of the dice. Ancient dice share practically equivalent (or identical) spot markings to those of modern dice - the design has been passed to us through the millennia! In Greek and Roman times, most dice were made of bone, horn and ivory; others were of bronze or stone. Cubical dice with have been found in Chinese excavations from 600 bce and in Egyptian tombs dating from 2000 bce.
